Hiking
Trail
Savannah River Swamp
(Webb Wildlife Management
Area)
Trail Map

Description:
Beginning at Bluff Lake within the Webb Wildlife Management Area, this
easy 2-mile one way trail to the mighty
Savannah River offers quite a retreat from everyday life. Trees with blue
arrow blazes guide you into the dark and mysterious wetlands along the Savannah’s
banks, and are especially helpful where you might encounter overgrowth
on the trail. You will pass from a "normal" appearing forest
to one of Bald cypress trees that are the
special attraction here. Their “knees” take on such fantastic
forms and frequently grow tall as a person. The Savannah River almost
sneaks up on you, since the riverbanks are quite low in the
floodplain. The wide river channel is one of the few places where
sunlight reaches you in this usually shady terrain. Be aware that
the trail may be submerged when the Savannah River approaches flood
stage.
Length:
2 miles one way
Fees:
None.
Directions:
From Exit 21 on Interstate 95 at Ridgeland, drive west on SC 336 to
Tillman (approximately 8 miles). Turn right onto US 321 and drive
to Garnett (approximately 12 miles), then turn left onto Hampton
County S-25-20. The entrance to Webb Wildlife Management Area is
approximately 2 miles on the left. Enter the Webb WMA and continue
to Bluff Lake Picnic Area and park. The trailhead is at a metal gate
just beyond the picnic area.
Hours:
Dawn to dusk. This is primarily a hunting facility, so it’s a good
idea to call ahead to be sure your visit does not coincide with
hunting activities. Hikers should avoid turkey hunting season (April)
and deer hunting season (October through December).
Camping:
No camping.
