James Island County Park Trails
(Charleston County)

Description: From any parking area, begin this network of accessible, walking/biking trails that pass through lakeside, wetland and wooded habitats. Watch for a variety of wildlife including ducks, heron, turtles and snakes. Remember to wear insect repellent in warm weather. Bikes, and roller blades are not permitted on docks or decks. Pets must remain on leashes. Motorized vehicles are restricted to roadways. Restrooms are located at the Park Center and picnic areas. Bike rentals are available at the Picnic Center.

Yellow loop (1.5 miles) From the Picnic Center, turn right at the playground, loop behind the campground area, pass the marsh, woods and climbing walls, and circle back past the lake and Park Center.

Green Loop (1.0 mile) From the Park Center, branch off the yellow loop and skirt around the other side of the lake until you reconnect with the yellow trail.

Red Loop (1.5 miles, including boardwalk spur) From the Picnic Center, pass the blue trail and branch left. You will skirt a quiet wetland area as you pass beneath oaks and Spanish moss. You can follow a spur trail to a fishing pier, before you complete the loop back to the picnic area.

Orange Loop (0.8 mile, sand and dirt path) From the playground area, branch off the red loop, circle a meadow, wind through the pine woods and reconnect with the red loop.

Blue Loop (0.2 mile) Branch off and reconnect to the yellow and red trails.

Length: 5 miles of interconnecting loop trails.

Fees: $1 per person (children 2 and under free).

Directions: From Charleston, drive west on US 17 and turn left on SC 171 south (Folly Road). Drive approximately 1 mile and turn right onto SC 700. Drive 1.5 miles and turn left onto Riverland Drive. Drive 1.7 miles and turn right at the James Island County Park sign. The entrance gate is .5 mile straight ahead.

Hours: Open daily May thru August 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; March, April, September, and October 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and November thru February 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
