Description: From the parking area, cross
Riverside Drive to begin approximately 1.5 miles of
wheelchair-accessible park paths, or a boardwalk which follows the
banks of the Edisto River. You can enter the gardens at any point, but
pass under an arbor to begin an out and back walk on the boardwalk.
Once on the boardwalk, you will enjoy the soothing sounds of a
waterwheel as it lifts water from the river to a pond within the park.
You will continue into a shady forest of cypress and hardwood trees
draped with Spanish moss. Once you are in the midst of the woods, you
will see cypress knees that look almost like human figures standing in
the water. You can relax at several overlooks, where you can just sit
and watch the river as it passes, or watch the many birds that inhabit
this area. Restrooms and fountains are located near the parking area
on the upper level. Pets are allowed on leashes.
Length: 1.5 miles of interconnecting loops.
Fees: None.
Directions: From Orangeburg, drive west on
John C. Calhoun Drive (US 301) and turn right onto Riverside Drive.
After you cross Russell Street, the parking area is on your right.
