Bicycle Route

Central

This route passes through the center of the state between Kings Mountain State Park (North Carolina border) and the Redcliffe State Historic Site near the Georgia border covering 166 miles.

Kings Mountain State Park is one of the State's larger state parks with camping, a full range of recreational opportunities, and a colonial period living farm which is well worth the visit. Two other well-spaced state parks along the way offer overnight camping facilities. If an overnight stay is desirable before entering Georgia, the Pine Acres campground (commercial), north of Aiken, SC, is conveniently located on US 21, 21 miles from the SC/GA border.

Dreher Island State Park, at about the mid-point of this route, is located on 50,000 acre Lake Murray, which offers most water related activities including some of the best fishing in the State. This park also provides an excellent base for a side trip into Columbia, the State's capital.

This route passes through the charming old rural towns of York, Chester, and Batesburg. A side trip into Aiken is also worth it. Aiken has many stately old homes and gardens and is one of nations best known centers for the training of thoroughbred race horse.
