Designed as the South Carolina leg of the Adventure
Cycling Association's Virginia to Florida route, this route roughly parallels the
coastline for 227 miles. For those entering or leaving North Carolina on this route, it is
suggested that you write or phone the North Carolina Bicycle Program to request the North
Carolina Bicycle Highway map D-Ports of Call.
The terrain is
flat with only slight grades and it passes through some very scenic farm woodland
countryside and through a number of very small towns. It has been intentionally routed
some distance from the coast to escape the congestion, high speed tourists, and commercial
traffic of Georgetown, Charleston, and Savannah.
One of the overnight public campsites found on the route is the
245,000 acre Francis Marion National Forest, which provides rustic campsites off of US 17
about 13 miles north of Moncks Corner. Additionally, there are modern campsites at Givhans
Ferry State Park on the Edisto River and Little River Campground and Marina, two blocks
east of US 17 in Little River (803) 249-2654.
Givhans Ferry State Park, with its Spanish moss-draped Live Oaks and
high bluffs overlooking the black waters of the Edisto river, makes an ideal base for a
day-long side trip (30 miles each way) into the beautiful aristocratic port city of
Charleston. This side trip will also provide the opportunity to visit the magnificent
gardens and colonial period houses of Drayton Hall, Middleton Place, and Magnolia
Plantation.
