Horse Trail
Lynches Woods

(Newberry, SC)

TrailMap

Description:
Tucked away on the outskirts of Newberry, this quaint little forest includes convenient access to hiking, biking, and a 6.1-mile, moderately difficult loop trail for equestrians. The shady equestrian trail remains popular because of its short, steep hills and some refreshing creek crossings. The 276-acre plot of woodlands began as a project by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. For many years, the woods saw use primarily by just hikers and equestrians. But mountain bikers recently discovered the area and turned it into an especially popular destination.

Length: 6.1-mile loop

Fees: None

Directions: From Exit 76 on I-26, near Newberry, drive toward Newberry on SC 219 to the intersection with US 76/SC 34. Turn left, and drive to the traffic light where SC 34 splits to the right. The entrance to Lynches Woods is at a large sign on the left. Horse trailers can park and unload at the gravel parking lot in front on the old armory.

Hours: Open year-round

Camping: There are two primitive campsites off the four-mile dirt road that circles the woodland and Camp Holly Springs is open to equestrians.
