Description:
Begin this short, easy-walking, out-and-back, sandy trail at parking area “D.” You will walk amid barrier island foliage to the dead wood and ocean debris on the shoreline. Stay on the trail until you reach the beach. Watch for white-tailed deer, raccoon, snakes, and over 100 species of birds including gulls, pelicans, and terns. You can also tour the historic lighthouse ($1 per person) that offers a scenic view of both island and sea. 

 

Restrooms and water are located at the Lighthouse Complex and the Visitor Center  that houses natural and cultural exhibits. . Pets are permitted on leashes.  Insect repellent is recommended during the warm months.

Length: 0.3 mile one-way.

Directions: From I-95 Exit 33, drive north on US 17 for approximately 8 miles and stay to the right on US 21 south. In Beaufort, continue south on US 21 to Hunting Island. The park entrance is located on the left past the campground entrance. Pick up a map at the Visitor Center and drive to parking area “D.” The trail head is on the left before you reach the beach parking and lighthouse.
