Description: You probably won't see many other hikers during your walk on this easy, 4.5-mile loop, because the only access to the island is by private boat. You will experience wetlands areas and bluffs, which at only 40 feet above sea level are the highest points in Georgetown County. In the wetlands area there may be some standing water after heavy rains. You will pass under stately moss-draped oaks, then through a longleaf pine forest where some of the trees are more than 100 years old, and is the habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. This is also an area where many rare plant species thrive, so stay on the marked trail. There are no facilities on Sandy Island, so bring any food or water you may need. Insect repellant is a must during the summer, and remember you are also in the habitat of many snakes and alligators. Do not remove any animals or plants, or go into inhabited areas.

Length: 4.5-mile loop.

Fees: None.

Directions: From Myrtle Beach, drive south on US 17 to Murrell’s Inlet and turn right (west) onto Wachesaw Road (Horry County S-62). Look for Wacca Wache Landing in approximately 2.5 miles. From the landing, go by boat to Mulberry Landing, which is approximately 2 miles north on the west side of the Waccamaw River and marked by a Department of Natural Resources sign. A second trailhead is approximately 4 miles farther on Bull Creek. Be aware the tides can influence conditions on the river.

Hours: Dawn to dusk. October is hunting season and visitors are strongly advised to wear bright clothing.
