Hiking
Trail
Gum
Gap (#13)
(Mountain
Bridge Wilderness Area)
Trail Map

Description:
After a 1.4mile hike on the Raven Cliff Falls trail, you will reach
the junction and eastern trailhead of the Gum Gap Trail. This easy to
moderate trail is considered a leg of the Foothills Trail, since
it runs concurrent with the Foothills Trail for its entire length. You
will enjoy a leisurely hike on old logging roads through a forest of
hardwoods, white pine and thickets of rhododendren and mountain
laurel. At 1.5 miles you will reach a junction with the Naturaland
Trust Trail where you can make a side trip, and hike .4 mile to a
suspension bridge over Raven Cliff Falls. At 1.6 miles you will leave
the Mountain Bridge Area and enter the Watson Heritage Preserve marked
by a diamondshaped sign on a tree. At approximately 2 miles you will
come to the confluence of Matthews and Julian Creeks, where the water
crossing may be shin deep, but the sandy bottom is easy on the feet.
The Gum Gap Trail ends at Gum Gap, on the border of South and
North Carolina. At this point you have the option of continuing for an
additional 7.5 miles on the Foothills to Sassafras Mountain and North
Carolina County Road 199, or returning the way you came.
Length:
3.3 miles, plus 1.4 miles
on the Raven Cliff Falls Trail.
