Trail
Sinkhole
Pond Nature
(Santee State Park)
Trail Map
Description:
From the parking area, you will walk through a varied habitat, from a
pine forest, to a swampy area, then to a near-desert area around the
highlight of this trail, a limestone sinkhole pond. During dry periods
you may not see a defined pond, but during wet periods you may see two
ponds. You will find an interesting educational sign at the pond,
which explains the formation of sinkholes in the area. There are deer
trails and random footpaths, including a shortcut through thick brush
back to the parking area, but stay on the main trail. Watch for
snakes, and in warm months wear insect repellent. Pets must be on a
leash no longer than 6 feet. Water and restrooms are available at the
swimming area.
Length:
0.5-mile loop.
Directions:
From Exit 98 on I-95 at Santee, drive 1.2 miles west on SC 6 and turn
right onto Orangeburg County S-38-105. At the stop sign turn right onto
Cleveland Road and enter the Day-Use Area. At the fork in the road,
follow Boy Scout Camp Road to the right. There is no trailhead sign,
so watch for the small parking area on the right.
