Description:
From the sign near the entrance gate, begin this short, gently
rolling, out-and-back, hiking/biking trail. Follow the winding dirt
path over roots, and bumps through occasionally dense, semi-tropical
foliage. The trail is well marked at a jagged juncture where you will
turn right, go a short distance, and then turn left back into the
woods. The trail ends at the paved road to the campground. Watch for
white-tailed deer, raccoon, snakes, and over 100 species of birds. At the beach, you can tour a historic lighthouse ($1 per
person) that offers a scenic view of both island and sea.
Restrooms and water are located at the Lighthouse Complex and the
Visitor Center that houses natural and cultural exhibits.
Length:
1.0 mile one-way.
Directions:
From I-95 Exit 33, drive north on US 17 for approximately 8 miles and
stay to the right on US 21 south. In Beaufort, continue south on US 21
to Hunting Island. The park entrance is located on the left past the
campground entrance. Enter the park, and walk back through the gate.
The trail is on the right.
