TrailMap

Description:
Pick up a map at the trail kiosk to guide you through this gently rolling, mostly easy-to-follow, foot-traffic only, out-and-back dirt trail through mixed forest and wetland areas. Enter at the gate, and follow the trail (not the road) to the right. You will wind through the woods and cross and re-cross the roadbed before you reach the dike. Woodland gives way to wetland as the trail passes between bald cypress on one side and oak draped with Spanish moss on the other. Watch for a variety of birds and other wildlife including wood storks (from April to June), water birds, deer, turtles, alligators, and snakes. The main trail dead-ends at a posted gate where you will need to return the way you came. You can extend your hike on the secondary trials and dirt roads, but be aware that some trails may be under construction.

Remember to guard against mosquitoes and ticks with insect repellent, and bright colored clothing during deer hunting season. Also, carry water during warm weather. There are picnic tables along the trail, but no facilities are available.

Length: 5.0 miles of designated nature trail (9.0 miles of interconnecting roads, trails and secondary trails).

Fees: No fee.

Directions: From Charleston, drive west on US 17 for approximately 13 miles. Bear left onto SC 162 and drive approximately 4 miles. The trail is on the right; look for the trail sign in the parking area.

Hours: Daily, dawn to dusk.

Camping: No camping.
