Hiking
Trail
Asbury
(Asbury Hills United
Methodist Youth Camp)
Trail Map

Description:
Starting at the Well House, this moderately difficult loop trail
penetrates deep into a forest of oaks and pines toward the headwaters
of Matthews Creek. Red and gold blazes provide directions until you
reach a small clearing where the Asbury and the Gold Trail split. You
will turn to the left and continue following the red blazes into the
woods where you may see yellow root, crested dwarf iris, and bush
honeysuckle, a yellow flowering shrub found only in the high
elevations of Greenville and Oconee counties. When you reach Matthews
Creek, you can make a dry crossing by using two cables strung across
the creek. Once across the creek the Asbury Trail runs concurrent with
the Naturaland Trust Trail (pink blazes) for a short distance then
splits to the right. You will cross several tributaries, one of which
makes a drop of 40 feet over the entrance to Moonshine Cave, and thus
is called Moonshine Falls.
Be aware that the red blazes are spread out, and there are
many unmarked side trails, so be sure to take a map with you. Insect
repellent is recommended during warm months.
Note: Due to a
property sale, the Asbury trail is temporarily closed beyond Moonshine
Falls, so you must return the way you came.
Length: Approximately 3.3 miles.
Fees: No fee, but call ahead to get
permission to enter and use the trails within the camp. During the
summer when the camp is full, you may not be allowed to walk the
trails.
Directions: From Greenville, drive
north on US 276 to where SC 8 joins US 276. The camp entrance is
approximately 1 mile further on the left. The trailhead is at the
parking area for the Well House within the camp.
Hours: Ask about the camp schedule
when you call.
Camping: No public camping is
permitted.
