Old Mill Race
(Hagood Mill, Pickens, SC)
Trail Map

Description:
Follow this short, rolling dirt loop (some steps near the mill) through a quiet natural area that
will take you back in history. From the parking area,
walk to the Hagood Mill and from the foot bridge you can see the
waterwheel used to turn the grinding stones. Cross the foot bridge, turn left,
and you will pass over the trough for the water that flows over the
waterwheel. You can turn left again, cross another foot
bridge and return to the parking area, or continue beneath tall pine and hardwood trees
to a
replica of a Cherokee home site. When you reach the covered walking
bridge, cross over, and loop back along the narrow ditch that once carried
water to the mill. You may see a variety of wildlife including birds,
snakes, and squirrels.
If you visit between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
on the third Saturday of the month, you can watch the fully restored 19th-century
gristmill grinding cornmeal, wheat flour, and grits. Insect repellant is
recommended in warm weather. Pets are permitted on a leash.
