Lawson’s Fork Creek
(Spartanburg County)
Trail
Map

Description:
Starting from US 221 you will pass by five mill villages, under
towering railroad trestles, and between 19th century bridge
abutments. You may see animals, such as deer, raccoons, opossums, and
snakes that live along the banks, and use the downed trees as natural
bridges. A variety of birds also inhabit this area, and you may see a
blue heron wading in the shallows.
The best months to paddle this stream
are October through May when the water level and flow is at its highest,
but even so, be aware that there are several sections of the creek where
you will have to portage due to blockage, or depending on your skill,
rough water. After you pass
under the second railroad trestle (approximately 3 miles from US 221)
you will come to White’s Mill Dam. Portage is on the right and on
private property, so respect the privacy of this area.
Also, you will encounter fast moving
water at the Upper Shoals area (see map). Run this area at
your own risk and always wear a life jacket!
