(Lee, County)

TrailMap

Description:
Starting at any point within the loop, this pleasant, easy walking trail provides a small piece of history and a wide variety of wildlife. You will circle 73-acre Lake Ashwood, which is said to have been created when slaves diked up McGrits Creek during the last century. During your walk you will be surrounded by many beautiful birds such as the Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, and numbers of Red-headed woodpeckers. Although the area is mainly open woodland, you will be treated to the beauty of yellow jessamine, South Carolina’s state flower, wild grapes, a few small pines, and dry grass. For the fishermen, the lake is stocked every year with grass carp, blue and channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill bream, redear sunfish, black crappie, bowfin, and chain pickerel.

Directions: From Exit 116 on I-20 near Bishopville, drive south on US 15. Lake Ashwood is 7 miles on the right.
