Interpretive Trail

Coquina Nature

(Poinsett State Park)

TrailMap

Description:
This easy, 1.5-mile loop within Poinsett State Park is no ordinary nature trail. Named after a naturally occurring limestone made of broken seashells, the Coquina Trail passes through a surprisingly mountain-like environment considering its locale within central South Carolina. You can expect to pass galax and mountain laurel during a short climb to a trailside shelter – an especially interesting contrast considering you can also see Spanish moss elsewhere on the hillside. From the shelter at the top of the 100-foot bluff, Old Levi Mill Pond comes into view almost directly below. Originally a freshwater reserve for rice planting, the mill adds a note of serenity to your stop. Restrooms and drinking water are available at the parking area.

Free Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) is available at and near the park office building.

Note: Cyclists using the Palmetto Trail, must use the park road between the office and park entrance.

Length: 1.5-mile loop

Directions: From Columbia, drive east (west from Sumter) on US 378 and turn south onto SC 261. Drive for 10 miles and turn right onto Park Road (Sumter County S-43-63) and drive approximately 1.9 miles to Poinsett State Park and the trailhead is at the end of the road by the park office.
