Landsford
Canal State Park

County)
Trail Map

Description: Starting from the
picnic area you have a choice of three trails, the Canal Trail, the
Nature Trail, and the Eagle Point Trail, each one offering something
a little different. The main attraction is the Canal Trail, and you
can start from either the picnic area, or the south entrance to the
park. This easy, 1.5-mile walk follows Landsford Canal, which was
built in the 19th century to bypass the rocky rapids of
the Catawba River, and at one time this canal served as an important
trading route between the foothills and coastal plain. Today, the
remnants of the original canal stonework and "locks" that equalized
the water can still be seen toward the south end of the trail.
You can also start the paved Nature
Trail at the picnic area and follow the banks of the Catawba River. This
is a peaceful walk with just the sound of the water tumbling over rocks,
and songs of many birds. Check with park personnel about seeing nesting
eagles during your walk. The Nature Trail ends at an overlook where you
can view the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies when in bloom.
The short Eagle Point Trail also starts
at the picnic area, and ends at a bluff overlooking the Catawba River.
Another feature of the park is the lock
keepers house, which serves as an interpretive center. Information about
the canal and a model depict how the locks controlled the water level as
boats passed through the canal.
Restrooms and water are available in the
picnic ground.
You can also start from the park and paddle part (approximately 6.5
miles) of the Catawba River Trail.
Length: Canal Trail 1.5 miles, Nature Trail (Paved) 0.6 mile, and Eagle
Point Trail 0.2 mile.
Directions: From Exit 65 on
Interstate 77 in Chester County, drive east on SC 9 for 1.2 miles and
turn left (northeast) onto SC 223. After approximately 6.5 miles, SC 223
will end at US 21. Turn left, drive 1.6 miles and turn right onto
Landsford Road (Chester County S-12-327). Drive 1.5 miles, turn left on
Park Road (S-12-600) and continue to the main park entrance (Entrance
#1). If you continue on Landsford Rd. for 1.3 miles you can turn left
for a secondary entrance (Entrance #2).
