The trails along the edge of Shealy’s Pond Heritage Preserve are what you would expect in a natural area, a bit squishy, but that boggy bottom creates a unique habitat that attracts people, small mammals and lots of birds.

The Molly’s Rock Picnic Area, built on the site of an old homestead, is located near a massive granite boulder known locally as Molly’s Rock. The origin of this name is uncertain because there are several different accounts of its source. The picnic shelter was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) sometime between 1936 and 1942.

This 15.5-mile wooded footpath provides the perfect vantage point to soak in the beauty of the narrow, twisting waterway that serves as the natural boundary between South Carolina and Georgia. Cedar Springs Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trail is located in the northern portion of the Long Cane Ranger District. The trail is only managed for allterrain vehicles (ATV) and dirt bikes. Jeeps, Hummers and other four-wheel-drive vehicles are not permitted. Golf carts also are not allowed.

Open year round at no charge to its visitors, Burrells Ford is a nice choice for camping along the Chattooga River. This is a short hike that takes campers from the parking area to the campground.

Earls Ford is a nice .3-mile, hiking-only trail where you descend through a mixed hardwood and pine forest in the quiet, fresh mountain air.

The 4,600-acre preserve includes almost three miles of undeveloped, breathtaking beachfront that you’ll never forget. It only takes about a half-mile to walk from the parking area to the beach along the Pockoy Island Trail, but then you can continue exploring as far as you want along the beach.

Although the lake serves as the focal point for Wateree, other day use activities are available including picnicking and a short, wooded nature trail.
