Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was born to former slaves in rural Mayesville in Sumter County, the youngest of 17 children and the only one born into freedom. In Bethune's hometown, there is a lovely park named in her honor, as well as a wonderful nature trail that can be used for an afternoon stroll or bike ride.
