Summary:
Boyd Foundation Passage (26 mi, moderate): A scenic new link in the Palmetto Trail, this passage weaves through the Wateree Heritage Preserve, completing a continuous connection from Columbia’s Capital City Passage to the Wateree Passage—thanks to a generous grant from the Boyd Foundation.
The trail passes through rich midlands farming and hunting lands before arriving at SC DNR’s WT “Billy” Tolar Boat Landing on the Wateree River. This beautiful spot provides access for canoes and other small vessels, and provides good fishing for brim and bass. From there, the trail climbs to the top of Cook’s Mountain, the highest point in the Midlands. From the 372-foot peak it is said you can see into 3 counties on a good day. Descending back into bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands, managed for wildlife by the SC DNR, expect to see ducks, migratory birds, deer, wild turkey and quail, as well as a variety of plants. The trail also includes historical interpretation, noting the history of rice plantations and the cartographer who gave his name to the site.
Directions:Farmstead Road (south eastern) Trailhead - From Columbia, drive east on US -378 and exit right onto US-601. Travel south for approximately 7.3 miles and turn left on to Farmstead Road. The trailhead and parking area will be clearly marked.
Western Trailhead near McCrady Training Center — From I-77 take exit 9 (Leesburg Road). Follow Leesburg Road (State Route 262) east toward Sumter. Go approximately 12.5 miles and the trailhead/parking area will be on your left.
