Summary:
Here is a trail that serves hikers, bikes, and horses with something for all, but you have to alert about who can go where. Hikers can use the entire trail, but horses and bikers only parts
Croft Passage is a roller coaster for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians (watch signs for designated areas) through historic Croft State Park. Near the southern trailhead, the 65-foot “Advance America” Bridge—the longest trail bridge in a state park—crosses Fairforest Creek. In the 1700s, the nearby shoals supported a hub of mills, trading, and political activity, including the area’s first governmental organization, the Spartan Militia District. The northern trailhead marks the site of a Revolutionary militia victory at the First Battle of Cedar Springs in 1780. The park is best known as Camp Croft, a World War II Army training center. A ¾-mile hike on a blue-blazed trail spur leads to Whitestone Springs, site of a 1902 resort hotel. Croft Passage connects Hub City and Glenn Springs Passages.
Camping: Park campground, reservations advised, fee.
Note: The 11.4 mile equestrian section of the Palmetto Trail starts at mile 1.2 near the stables, and goes to the northern trailhead at mile 12.6. Mountain bikes are not allowed on the equestrian section from mile 1.2 to mile 8.5. The 3.65 mile Bike Connector follows Croft State Park Road to McFadden Road until it rejoins the Palmetto Trail.
