Summary:

Henderson Heritage Preserve consists of unmarked firebreak trails that loop through a quiet and natural preserve protected by the Department of Natural Resources. The rare plant species bog spice bush Lindera subcoriacea, is the preserve's rarest element and a hiking trail will guide the visitor through much of this habitat.

Loading Trails

You can choose one of two sections of hilly, rugged, unmarked firebreak trails loop through a quiet, natural preserve protected by the Department of Natural Resources. You may see rare plants as well as turtles, snakes, and other wildlife as you follow sandy paths and rutted roads past ponds, lowland areas, and high vistas. The lower section features several sections of natural udorthent areas where the erosion resembles the Grand Canyon.

These trails are reserved for foot traffic only. Hunting, camping, and recreational fires are not permitted, however, fishing is allowed. Remember to bring your compass or GPS, bug repellant, and water. No restrooms or facilities are available.

Directions:

To the upper trail section: From Exit 18 on I-20 near Aiken, drive south on SC 19 for 2.2 miles and turn right onto Mayfield Road (dirt). The parking area is approximately 0.9 mile on the right. Pass the first gate, and the pond, and park at the second gate. Begin the trail at either gate.

To the lower trail section: From Exit 18 on I-20 near Aiken, drive south on SC 19 for 3.2 miles and turn right onto Croft Mill Road. The parking area is approximately 1.3 miles on the right.
