Loading Trails

Begin this short, mostly-level, white-blazed, out and back trail with a loop at the end, by following the dirt path from the picnic area to the trail kiosk. You will walk through grass dotted with wildflowers and clover, and then pass through a wooded area to an open field, which once served as a battlefield. At the field, turn left on the dirt road and walk until you see the trail signs on your left. From there you will loop back to the starting point. During your hike you may see snakes, deer, turkey, hawks, rabbits, and a variety of other wildlife. You can vary or add to your trek by following any of a number of interconnecting trails.

Walt Schrader (1913-2005), the trail network’s namesake, was a committed conservationist, advocate in world-wide environmental affairs, and a champion of access to recreational lands. Dedicated in 2000, the Walt Schrader Trails are a lasting tribute to this keen outdoorsman and the natural beauty he loved to explore.

Restrooms are available at the Visitors Center. Allow time to complete your hike before closing hours. Insect repellent is recommended during the warm months. Pets and smoking are prohibited.

Hours: Monday through Saturday - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. / Sunday - 1 to 5 p.m.
