Once part of a rice-growing estate, the I’on Swamp is famous among birders for the variety of species that descend here during spring and fall migration. In particular, because the most elusive bird in America, Bachman’s warbler, has been spotted here. The easy, two-mile interpretive loop trail wanders within the swamp along a dike patchwork on the remnants of the abandoned Witheywood Plantation. The area provides wide range of wildlife viewing, especially the numerous large alligators that come into view where the trail crosses one particular pond. The trail’s backstretch pushes into gorgeous wetlands dotted with bald cypress trees and murky swampland. There are no facilities at the trailhead, but the Sewee Visitor Center is approximately 100 yards north of I’on Swamp Road on US 17.

Since this is a low area, it make be underwater after heavy rains. Insect repellent is recommended during warm months. The Sewee Shell Mound Trail—featuring a 120-foot boardwalk overlooking the prehistoric shell ring—is also located nearby.

Camping: There is camping available at the Buck Hall Campground within Francis Marion National Forest. To find Buck Hall, follow US 17 north from Charleston for about 30 miles. Turn right onto Buck Hall Landing Road (FS 242), which runs into the campground. There are 14 sites with camp pads, fire rings and electrical hookups; camping is $15 per unit. Parking for non-campers is $5 per vehicle.

From the I-526 junction in Mount Pleasant: Drive approximately 15 miles and turn left onto I’on Swamp Road (Forest Service 228). Drive 2.5 miles to the parking area on the left (south).
