McCalla State Natural Area is managed as a special resource park because of its varied natural and cultural resources, that provide outdoor recreation and educational opportunities. This backcountry area is located in the northwest portion of Abbeville County, bordering Lake Russell, and consists of 6,239 acres.

Starting from the parking area, you have a choice of a large loop, or a short out and back section with a loop at its end that encircles a peninsula of Richard B. Russell Lake. Blue Carsonite posts with arrows or blue paint marks on trees provide you with directions for a pleasant ride through overgrown fields and along sloping shorelines. No facilities are available on the trail, but a portable restroom is provided at the parking area. Compliance with State Parks Rules and Regulations, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lease Agreement must be kept.

Note: Horse riding is permissible, on designated trails only, year round Sunday - Friday (No Saturday riding). Horses are prohibited outside of the Special Use Area. Bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited on the horse trail and motorized vehicles are prohibited behind barricades or closed gates and in areas otherwise posted as "Closed to Vehicles."
