Summary:

You won’t go far along this trail without encountering some kind of wildlife — broad-winged hawks, migratory ducks, wading birds, turtles, maybe even a gator or two. Befitting its name, the trail is shaded by beautiful tupelo trees, along with bald cypress and massive live oaks more than 150 years old.

The first two miles of the trail skirt along the edge of the refuge’s managed impoundments which provide excellent birdwatching year-round. You then veer off to the right and follow Vernezobre Creek on a dike that remains from the days when this area was a rice plantation. Unlike some other dikes in this area, this one has not been built up or widened. Befitting its name, tupelo trees shade the Tupelo Trail, although you will see many bald cypress and massive live oaks, some said to be 150 years old. In season, birding and alligator watching opportunities are almost unlimited, and there is a good chance you will spot great horned owls, ricebirds such as bobolinks, and red-winged blackbirds.

Hours: Dawn to dusk
