The Town of Port Royal's Navy Heritage Park is a great park to take the kids for an afternoon picnic in the shade. The park offers a walking trail, skate park, playground, gazebo and picnic area.

The trail starts out through a hardwood forest and then opens onto a grassy path, crossing the remains of long-abandoned rice fields. After about 2.5 miles you arrive at the New River, Beaufort County’s only freshwater river, then the route takes you through the Great Swamp and an area once harvested for timber.

The Newberry Passage, which opened in 2019, runs through an 18th-century cemetery, down the city’s Main Street, and through the Newberry College campus, passing by historic homes, the Newberry Opera House, and the city’s old courthouse.

Named because nine bridges across a small creek were needed to gain access to the property, the 560‑acre nature preserve is one of the most biologically significant properties in the southeast. Located where the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains meet the Piedmont, The land encompasses five mountains that harbor more than 134 species of native wildflowers.

The paved 1 mile walking trail includes wayside signs, the reconstructed siege works and Stockade Fort, original 1781 Star Fort, town site of old Ninety Six, historic roads, and more.

The Town of Ninety Six has a paved walking-only loop trail through a neighborhood park, as well as a playground and picnic area. This makes the town park great for a noontime stroll.

Riverfront Park is home to the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, erected in honor of the countless military personnel and civilians that served the United States and the Greater Charleston region while the Charleston Navy Base was operational. The Park also has some lovely, scenic walking/biking paths, including a boardwalk, along the Cooper River.
